I don't have anything to say about Green Book since I didn't see it. Except, maybe, that if Mahershala Ali's performance was as good as the one he's currently turning in on HBO's True Detective, I can see why voters might be swayed.
But I did see all the animated shorts. I thought Bao was going to win, and it did, but I thought it was far from the best. Don't get me wrong, Bao is a good film, but compared to other nominees and at least one honorable mention, it was superficial, more polish and technical prowess than substance.
I think it largely won because Pixar, so cue the reputation and the Disney promotion machine. But also, I think, it benefited from some Hollywood angst over all the controversial non-Asian Asian movies of the last couple of years.
Trevor Jimenez's Weekends was a spectacular, thoughtful, wordless story about single parenting and domestic violence, crammed with all his personal memories as a child of divorce. But it wasn't lighthearted and happy, and the animation was used to underscore tragedy and injustice. I would have picked it.
The similarly themed One Small Step was a more well rounded story than Bao.
as was Zhanna Bekmambetova's story about life on a tightrope guided by a sparrow, Tweet Tweet. Unfortunately only a trailer is available.
Bao is online but you have to pay for it, either from Youtube or Google Play.
